Applications of the CO2 laser

CO2 laser treatment is an effective method to stimulate collagen production deep within the skin. It is also suitable for the removal of various skin conditions.

Possible applications include:

  • Scar treatment (e.g., deep acne scars)
  • Wrinkle treatment and rejuvenation of the face and décolleté
  • Removal of skin conditions such as seborrheic keratoses, dermal nevi, syringomas, xanthelasma, and pyogenic granuloma

How does CO2 laser treatment work?

The laser creates tiny channels in the skin, triggering the body’s natural healing process. This stimulates the production of connective tissue fibers (collagen and elastin), strengthening and rejuvenating the skin’s structure. At the same time, the skin’s surface is ablated at the sites of the channels.

When will you see the final results?

Healing processes within the deeper layers of the skin can take up to six months. As a result, the definitive final outcome may take up to half a year to fully appear.

How many treatments are necessary?

The treatment plan depends on several factors, such as the patient’s age, skin type, skin condition, desired results, and willingness to accept downtime.

Patients can choose between a single treatment, which may involve a longer recovery time and potentially higher risks, or 2-3 treatments, which involve shorter downtimes. The parameters for fractional CO2 resurfacing can be customized to the individual goals, preferences, and skin type of each patient, allowing for a personalized approach.

It is also possible to repeat the treatment after some time (even years), which is common for facial rejuvenation procedures.

Is the treatment bloody or painful?

The intensity of the laser treatment varies depending on the indication and treatment goals. In many cases, pain relief is provided with air cooling combined with a pre-applied anesthetic cream. Local anesthesia, nerve block anesthesia, or mild pain medication can also be used if needed.

The heat generated by the laser seals superficial blood vessels, making the treatment largely bloodless. However, very small pinpoint bleeding may occur in some cases.

Healing process after CO2 laser treatment

During the first 2 to 5 days after treatment, the skin is typically swollen and red. Following an intensive treatment, oozing and crusting may also occur. After about two days, the skin starts peeling and fully regenerating. Most patients return to their normal daily routines within 3-5 days.

Pre- and post-treatment care for the CO2 laser

The most important prerequisite for CO2 laser treatment is that your skin should be as untanned as possible, and no sun holidays should be planned for the next four weeks. Additionally, no internal retinoid therapy should be ongoing at the same time.

Immediately after the treatment, the skin should be cooled with cold packs for 2 to 3 hours. In the following days, only a mild moisturizing cream is required—nothing else. During this time, avoid applying makeup or similar products. Complete avoidance of sun exposure is crucial.

After approximately five days, you can resume your normal activities. When spending time outdoors, the treated skin should be well-protected with high SPF sunscreen (SPF 50) for at least six weeks. Additionally, you should avoid activities that increase blood circulation in the face, such as sauna visits, intense sports, or facial massages, during the first few weeks after the procedure.

Our team will provide detailed guidance on your individual pre- and post-treatment care.
